Fresh cases of Ebola in sierra Leon

A village in Sierra Leon is currently on lock-down after the discovery of 31 new cases of Ebola.
Health officials say that the new infections were caused by one man who escaped quarantine in Freetown and sought help from a traditional healer in his hometown.
“Within a week the man’s mother, father, uncle, brother and the faith healer who performed the traditional ceremony on him were all in the ETC [Ebola treatment centre],” the International Medical Corps (IMC) said.
The affected community, which is home to 500 people, is close to the town of Makeni.
“On Sunday we had just five patients, it was really quiet, Then all of a sudden the ambulances started arriving and we had 16 people and it hasn’t stopped since. I think we have about 50 patients with 31 confirmed Ebola cases,” Bill Boyes, spokesman for the IMC in Makeni, said.
The man reportedly died 24 hours after his return and his father and the traditional healer soon followed suit.
Authorities in Sierra Leone were previously forced to conduct a door-to-door search for infected patients in Porto Loko after a spike in Ebola cases.

Obama condemns ‘brutal, vicious’ Nemtsov killing

                                             Boris Nemtsov
US President Barack Obama condemned what he called the “brutal” and “vicious” murder of Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, a fierce critic of President Vladimir Putin who was shot dead in Moscow on Friday.
“We call upon the Russian government to conduct a prompt, impartial and transparent investigation into the circumstances of his murder and ensure that those responsible for this vicious killing are brought to justice,” Obama said in a statement.
“Nemtsov was a tireless advocate for his country, seeking for his fellow Russian citizens the rights to which all people are entitled.”
“I admired Nemtsov’s courageous dedication to the struggle against corruption in Russia and appreciated his willingness to share his candid views with me when we met in Moscow in 2009,” added Obama, calling Nemtsov a “dedicated” and “eloquent defender” of rights.

APC chieftain, others defect to PDP in Bayelsa

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Publicity Secretary for Sagbama local government, Bayelsa State, Prince Vincent Dakoru along with his teeming supporters have defected to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The former publicity secretary said he made the decision when he found out that the All Progressive Congress in the state has no ideology and discipline, especially in their conduct.
Speaking with newsmen in Yenagoa the Sagbama born politician reiterated that in life, it is always good to taste  both sides, pointing out that there is no seriousness in the activities of APC in the state.
He wondered why till date, the party is yet to inaugurate its executives both in the local government and at the state levels.
His words, “The APC as a party is made up of characters with questionable behaviour. The change they claim to portray is full of falsehood, all they know is their stomach without the people they want to govern at their heart.
“The exco both at the state and local government levels have not been inaugurated up till now, so tell me how the exco can work, not to talk of sanitizing the system. Therefore, I and my supporters have decided to come back to PDP where there is transparency”.
Prince Dakoru therefore enjoined other APC members in the state to have a re-think and come back to the ruling PDP and support other Bayelsans in making sure that President Goodluck Jonathan is given a second term to pilot the affairs of the nation.

FG to sack INEC Chairman before general elections

The Federal Government on Friday further compounded fears in some quarters that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, could be sacked before the general elections.
In an answer to inquiries on government’s stand on allegation that the INEC boss would soon be asked to proceed on a terminal leave, the Federal Government through the Minister of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation, Chief Edem Duke, gave a rather ambiguous answer.
He said the exit of Jega from the chairmanship of the INEC would take a natural course. Duke, who is also the supervising Minister of Information, spoke with journalists at the headquarters of the Ministry of Information in Abuja on Friday.
While answering a question on whether the Federal Government planned to send Jaga on terminal leave before the expiration of his tenure in June, Duke said Jega would not be sacked as President Goodluck Jonathan had pledged, but added that his exit from the electoral body would be a natural sequence.
The minister said, “On the issue of the INEC chairman, I align myself with what the President said that he has no plan to sack the INEC chairman.
“That is not to say that if it is time for the INEC chairman to naturally exit his office, then the natural course of things will not take place.
“It is like saying a civil servant has done 35 years or achieved the age of 60; we now begin to say that he must not retire or he must retire. I think all of that is in the terrain of the Presidency and he has spoken. I have nothing to add to that.”
Duke added, “I will also like to say once on that issue. I recall that for several weeks now; people keep threatening the President on the shift in the date of the poll. You begin to wonder that parties have a couple of extra weeks in order to reinvigorate their campaigns and try to reach as many voters as possible. Rather than do that, you begin to identify imaginary pockets of unlikely developments and then focus your attention on them and then when you lose election, you begin to complain.”
But members of the All Progressives Congress in the Senate and the Northern Elders Forum said that they would resist alleged plot to sack the INEC boss.
The senators had on Thursday alleged that there was a fresh plot by the Federal Government to   prevent Jega from superintending over the forthcoming general elections.
The Northern Elders Forum warned against attempts to remove Jega and insisted that the elections must hold within the timeline allowed by the law.

APC reacts to oath-taking allegation against Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress has said the “sickening and outlandish claim” by the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation that the APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, plans to become Vice President through the back door is designed to divert attention from the success of the party’s presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(rtd.), at the Chatham House in London on Thursday.
In a statement in London on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the PDP and the Jonathan Administration still did not have any answer to what the APC described as “an epochal moment that has separated the wheat from the chaff.”
The APC said, ”Our presidential candidate’s globally-acclaimed outing has presented Nigerians, and indeed the global community, with a choice between a bumbling, ineffective, incoherent, clueless, visionless and incompetent President and an assertive, knowledgeable, dignified, purposeful and principled President-in-waiting.
”Having failed to discredit the (United Kingdom) outing with a rented crowd, some of whom confessed to have been paid to carry placards they did not even understand, the PDP and the Jonathan Administration have now resorted to making nauseating claims that are totally untrue, absolutely incomprehensible and nothing but sheer bunkum.”
APC described the claim as the latest in “a series of desperate moves” by the PDP and the Jonathan Administration since the emergence of Buhari as the APC presidential candidate, and “the clearest indication yet that they have no answer to the unstoppable momentum of a man of history.”
It added, ”They have thrown everything imaginable at Gen. Buhari, but he has continued to wax stronger and stronger: They said he was not qualified, that he was too old, then they fabricated a medical report of an illness of their own choice, sponsored death wish adverts against him and instituted a myriad of court cases to stop him.
”After they failed to stop him, they went after the election itself, using the PVCs as a tool to launch a campaign for postponement and, when they realized that would not work, came up with the bogey of insecurity in the North-East to force a postponement of the election, hoping they can buy enough time to revive their electoral misfortune.
”With everything working against them, they engaged in a show of shame at The Chatham House that backfired badly, on the heels of their bare-faced lies that Gen. Buhari was hospitalised in London. The preposterous claim of a secret oath – reminiscent of what they do in their own party – by the apparently ailing spokesman for the Jonathan Campaign Organisation, Femi Fani-Kayode, is their latest desperate act.”
APC said in as much as it had so far refrained from engaging Fani-Kayode in what the party called “his game of character assassination, abuses and irresponsible name calling, the party is becoming seriously concerned that he may be caving in under pressure and reverting to his undignified past of substance abuse.”

Kenyan 17years old cleaning his entire community with human waste

Read the story of this young kenyan who was determined to solve a major problem that affected him and others in his community. Hoping that we might learn from his curiosity and motivation which might bring about general social change in our countries and societies.
When Leroy Mwasaru's school in western Kenya faced a sewage problem, the teenager and a group of friends set out to fix it.
It all started after tractors clearing land for the construction of a new dorm at the Maseno school near Kisumu encountered pit latrines. During the building process faeces started leaking into a nearby stream.
"There was uproar from the local community," Mwasaru recalls. "It was the only source of fresh water, and nobody wants faeces in their water."
At the time, the school was using firewood in the kitchen. Forests around the school were being eroded by the school's growing demand for timber, and smoke was damaging the lungs and eyes of the cooks.
Mwasaru came up with a plan to solve the problem by using human waste to power the gas stoves -- all whilst keeping up with homework and exams.
"There were some people who thought it would not work -- the attitude was very negative," says Mwasaru, who is now 17. "We came up with workshops in the school and in the community to convince people, and the response became more positive."
    First stage
During the test phase, the students used two tanks - one turned upside down and placed in the other. When the bacteria reacted with the oxygen and waste, gas was created. The top part raised up proving the presence of biogases.

In total, it took about a year for the "Human Waste Bioreactor" to go from idea to working facility.
Storage pits had to be dug, and the team had to collect cow dung and food waste which they used instead of human waste during the prototype phase.
The team's idea impressed Innovate Kenya, who awarded the teens funds to purchase a digester, which helps with the process. Gas produced in the pit was then filtered through a pipe into the kitchen, and used on the stoves to cook food.
    Next steps
Once the teenagers proved their prototype worked with cow dung, they started using human waste as well. Colleagues, friends and teachers at the school were benefiting from the system, but that wasn't enough for Mwasaru.
"After the school prototype was working I showed my dad, and he was very impressed," Mwasaru says. "I helped him build a similar system and now he uses it for cooking."
Having six cows, and fewer humans in his house, meant Mwasaru senior used cow dung to generate more gas than he can use. So he now shares it with the village which is made up of around 30 houses.
Research conducted by WFP found that collecting firewood is very time consuming. Woman in Kenya reported needing to collect wood three times per week, and each trip took an average of eight hours.
"With the gas they don't spend time searching and carrying wood," says Mwasaru "They are really happy about that."
    Ideal solution?
While this initiative may well be helping resolve a local issue, not everybody is convinced that biogas is the way forward. Environmental researcher Rinkesh Kukreja argues that the methane gases extracted in biofuel converters is still harmful to the environment as it contributes to the heating of the ozone layer. He also points out another, more obvious, drawback:
"There is the smell to consider. While it is not physically harmful, it is definitely unpleasant, and it can attract unwanted pests (rats, flies) and spread bacteria and infection.
Still, Mwasaru's system means fewer trees have to be chopped down. When his reactor is working with human waste, it could replace as much as 196 tonnes of wood - a significant benefit for the local ecosystem.
    Excrement efficiency
Progress has been made in extracting biogas, but Mwasaru has gone back to using cow dung rather than human waste whilst working on the next step.
"When urine is mixed with solid waste, acid in the urine breaks down the biogases," Mwasaru explains. "We need to develop the most cost-effective way and energy efficient way to use the human waste."
To achieve this, the team has designed a toilet which separates solid and liquid waste. While it's just on paper at the moment, the team is working with iHub Kenya to develop a prototype which they hope to build in March.
"Leroy seeks to understand everything he doesn't know by asking probing questions, taking notes and experimenting to learn," says David Moinina Sengeh, an MIT researcher and president of Global Minimum, a group working with youth to help them turn their ideas into tangible solutions.
    Prison project
Mwasaru may be one of the youngest people to produce biogas, but he is not the first.
Rwanda's prison system has used human waste mixed with cow dung and water to reduce running costs.
Waste generated from 8,000 inmates at the Nsinda prison is put through a system similar to Mwasaru's to make the kitchens smoke and firewood free.
But Kenya and Rwanda aren't the only African countries finding uses for human waste.
In Nigeria, three teenagers came up with a power generator that produces enough electricity for six hours. The whole thing is powered with pee.

Military operations force Boko Haram back to urban warfare

Bomb attacks in towns and cities look likely to increase in the run-up to forthcoming elections, despite the military claiming increasing successes against Boko Haram in captured territory.
At least 86 people were killed in explosions blamed on Boko Haram this week alone, all of them at crowded bus stations in the northeast, wider north and also in the country's central region.
The style of attack - using either explosives left in bags or suicide bombers - has prompted the government in Abuja to issue a warning for increased vigilance at "soft targets".
But with elections on March 28 that Boko Haram has already vowed to disrupt, security experts said there will be renewed fears about the safety of voters, particularly at polling stations.
"I think it's safe to say that as multi-national counter-insurgency operations continue in the northeast, Boko Haram will intensify its urban terror campaign," Ryan Cummings, chief Africa analyst at Red24 risk consultants, told AFP.
"Boko Haram will know that it lacks the resources or capacity to engage the Nigerian Army and its allies in conventional warfare, so its retributive attacks will increasingly focus on asymmetric warfare, which is resource-light but nevertheless damaging."
    Tactical shift
Attacking towns and cities recalls Boko Haram's previous tactics before it began capturing and seizing territory in the northeast in mid-2014, declaring some part of an Islamic caliphate.
Cities such as Kano and particularly the Borno state capital, Maiduguri, were hit regularly until the government declared a state of emergency in May 2013 in three northeast states.
The military and civilian vigilante forces managed to push the rebels out into more remote, rural areas, where violence continued and in many cases intensified.
With soldiers thin on the ground in the countryside -- and with apparent dissent in the ranks about the provision of weapons and equipment - Boko Haram launched its unprecedented land grab.
But since the attack on Baga on January 3, where hundreds of civilians, if not more, are thought to have been killed, and rebel strikes in Chad and Niger, there has been a concerted fight-back.
The troops, aided by soldiers from Cameroon, Chad and Niger, have bombarded rebel strongholds in northeast Nigeria and claim to have recaptured territory, including Baga last weekend.
President Goodluck Jonathan visited the ravaged town on the shores of Lake Chad on Thursday, telling troops that the conflict, which has killed more than 13 000 since 2009, would soon be over.
Observers have framed the claimed successes against the backdrop of upcoming elections in Nigeria, which were postponed for six weeks from February 14 because of the ongoing military operations.
The national security advisor said at the time that troops would not be available to provide security on polling day.
    Further delay?
Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau vowed in a recent video that the elections, now scheduled for March 28, "will not be held, even if we are dead".
Militants have even distributed fliers calling on people not to vote.
Mark Schroeder, from political and security risk analysts Stratfor, said the recent bombings in Kano -- the north's biggest city -- and the central city of Jos, raised a new security threat.
"The Nigerian military, with renewed government backing, may achieve the easy steps of a counter-insurgency of asserting control in remote urban areas of the northeast," said Schroeder.
"But stopping Boko Haram from counter-attacks against civilians elsewhere is very difficult.
"You could say Boko Haram is merely being displaced while the Nigerian government publicists gains in Baga and elsewhere."
Boko Haram, which has invigorated its propaganda campaign with slick, Islamic State-style videos, will no doubt claim that such attacks put paid to government claims that it is being defeated.
Cummings argued that the return to guerrilla tactics in towns and cities could stretch security resources.
Abdullahi Bawa Wase, a security analyst who tracks the Boko Haram conflict, described the bombings as "desperation" on the part of the militants.
But he noted that such attacks had not stopped during the change in tactics to seize territory but were now taking place in tandem with hit-and-run strikes, "to show they still have the capability".

"We are only going to see an intense increase of this bombing in the next weeks," which could possibly force another postponement in the election, he added.

    Lupita Nyong'o's stolen dress returned!

Since the oscars, Lupita Nyong'o has been in the news for her stolen  Oscar dress -- which was reportedly worth between $150,000 and $10 MILLION --
Now, according to TMZ, the thief called Friday afternoon and said he took 2 of the pearls down to the Garment District in L.A. and learned they were fake. That's when he returned the dress to the hotel.
Law enforcement sources said Calvin Klein's people never told them if the pearls were real or fake. We're told the only person who represented the pearls as real and valued the dress at $150K was Lupita's stylist.
A source directly connected with the Women's Creative Director of Calvin Klein, Francisco Costa, put it this way to TMZ, "Did anyone ever say they were real from Calvin Klein? I always assumed everyone knew they were fake, but I guess not."
The source awesomely adds, "Do they really make dresses out of real jewels since Cleopatra died?"
Lesson learnt; Not all that glitters are gold...

kelly Osbourne quit "Fashion Police" ...
Multiple sources connected with the show revealed that producers and Kelly were at odds even before the Giuliana Rancic showdown, where Kelly threatened to quit unless Giuliana apologized over her comments about Zendaya on the red carpet at the Oscars.
We also learnt from TMZ that the tension started over the first episode the cast taped without Joan Rivers. Kelly was unhappy with the way the show was being produced. Producers, we're told, were "up to here" with Kelly so the handwriting was on the wall.
Sources tells us Kelly walked Friday.

Bangladesh protesters denounce killing of blogger

Hundreds of protesters have rallied in the Bangladeshi capital to denounce the murder of a prominent Bangladesh-born American blogger, who was hacked to death outside a university in Dhaka.
Students, activists and journalists gathered at Dhaka University on Friday to demand quick police action, a day after the attack on Avijit Roy and his wife Rafida Ahmed, who remains in critical condition.
The protesters said the killing raised questions about the government's ability to protect its citizens from crimes, and uphold democracy and freedom of speech.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, human rights activist Khushi Kabir questioned police inaction during the attack.
Witnesses have said that police and onlookers were present during the attacks, but no one came to help the victims. Police were not immediately available to comment on the accusation.
The couple were coming from a book fair at the university, when a group of men ambushed them, with at least two of the attackers hitting them with meat cleavers, police Chief Sirajul Islam told the Associate Press news agency.
The attackers then ran away, disappearing into the crowds. Two blood-stained cleavers were found after the attack, he said.
On Friday, Al Jazeera learned from the family of the slain victim that his body will be donated to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for medical research.
Avijit's younger brother Arijit Roy told journalists that family members have taken the decision to donate the body, according to the wishes of the victim. Shocked and heartbroken, protesters said the attack on Roy and his wife happened partly because of the government's failure to prosecute previous deadly attacks.
"The government cannot avoid its responsibility as it has failed to try similar crimes before," University professor Anwar Hossain told Al Jazeera.
In 2013, another blogger, Ahmed Rajib Haider, who also spoke out against religious fanatics, was killed by unidentified assailants near his home in Dhaka.
Activist Jonayed Saki demanded that police immediately arrest the suspects.
"How can such attacks ensue amid tight security," he asked.
The Center for Inquiry, a US-based nonprofit group Roy wrote for, said it was "shocked and heartbroken" by the murder.
"Dr Roy was a true ally, a courageous and eloquent defender of reason, science and free expression, in a country where those values have been under heavy attack," it said in a statement.
As night fell in Dhaka on Friday, student and activists held a torch procession to protest Roy's death.

Osinabanjo to handover office of vice president to Tinubu after six months- Femi Fani-Kayode

Femi Fani-Kayode, the spokesperson of the PDP Presidential campaign organization  alleged that a Chieftain of the APC, Bola Tinubu has compelled the Vice Presidential candidate of the APC, Prof Osinbajo to swear to an oath that he would resign as Vice President six months after inauguration (if their party wins) so that he can scheme his way into power if Gen Buhari dies in office. At a press meeting today in Abuja. This exactly what he said...
“The PDPPCO wishes to use this forum to expose the ungodly plan by Tinubu to seize the presidency of Nigeria by subterfuge. The real reason Tinubu nominated Osinbajo has been made known to us and we hereby offer a public service to the Nigerian people by drawing national attention to it. Tinubu wanted to be running mate to Buhari in spite of the nationwide resentment for Muslim-Muslim ticket that he and Buhari planned to foist on their party men and women. But when he and Buhari could not push through the agenda within the APC, he (Tinubu), after being given the opportunity to nominate a vice presidential candidate, he decided to prop up his stooge in the person of Prof Osinbajo.
Tinubu, according to our information, has compelled Osinbajo to swear to an oath that after six months in office, he would resign as the vice president, in the unlikely event that their party wins. Credible pieces of information at our disposal indicate that Tinubu has perfected plans to come to power through the back door. The ultimate objective of this plot is to ensure that Tinubu becomes president. The script is simple: given the questionable health of Buhari, Tinubu, who is desperate to be president for his own selfish reasons, will simply bid his time in the evil expectation that Buhari will not be able to go the whole hog.” Fani Kayode said

Motorists stranded due to fuel scarcity in Abuja, Nigeria.

Due to scarcity of fuel in Abuja, hundreds of motorists have been left stranded as they spent long hours waiting to fill their cars, Punch reported.
According to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation says the fuel scarcity is caused by marketers hoarding fuel.
Although there is enough fuel to keep the country in survival mode, measures have been taken place to ensure motorists receive fuel.
The Federal Government is currently in a bid to pay petroleum marketers as subsidy arrears but this will only take place either in February or March.
Government has also promised to play a huge role in the matter and will sort out the scarcity. Motorists have been made aware to not panic as this is temporal.

Policeman shot his superior to death in Bauchi, Nigeria.

A mobile policeman in Bauchi state shot dead his superior and former ADC to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, Superintendent of Police, Chris Eza (pictured above), yesterday February 26th in Bauchi.

According to family sources, Chris Eza had gone out to get food at an eatery along Ahmadu Bello way around 9pm when he saw some police officers on patrol. On observation, he found out that one of them, the suspect, was not properly dressed and immediately cautioned him. The junior officer, a Corporal, got angry and began to grumble for being told to dress properly.

An angry Chris felt his action was unacceptable and warned the officer that he was going to disarm him if he didn't take care. Instead of apologizing, the junior officer cocked his gun and threatened to shoot his boss.

He told Eza that if he came close to him, he would shoot. Calling his bluff, Eza moved towards the officer, who immediately opened fire. Other officers around rushed Chris to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) Bauchi where he was declared dead on arrival. Until his death, he was the MOPOL 11 Commander.

The officer has since been arrested and investigations into the motive for the killing is ongoing.
